Description & Steps
Below are specific details related to this project to consider as you progress through each core writing concept.
1 Explore
the Topic
For this essay, you will conduct primary research in the form of two interviews. You will also use your observations of the subjects.
2
Examine rhetorical context
For this essay, your audience will consist of your instructor and other members of the class. To develop a rhetorical context for this project, specifically describe your Audience, Time, Place, and Purpose. Step 2 in CHAPTER 3 provides guidance on each of these. What you write for Step 2 will be your situation analysis, which you will submit as part of your prewriting.
3 Select a medium
Your medium for this project will be a formal academic manuscript and must meet the guidelines listed below. Instruction on these guidelines can be found in CHAPTERS 24 of Writing: Ten Core Concepts and at the Purdue OWL website.
? Minimum 750 words for the first draft; minimum 1,000 words for the final draft; both drafts double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font
? For both first draft and final draft: Formatted according to MLA style.
? For both first draft and final draft: A works cited page must be included with entries for both of the interviews conducted for the essay.
4 Have something
to say
You selected the person you will profile in this essay because others will benefit in some way from knowing more about this individual. Conduct the interviews and take notes. Also observe the subjects? environments and mannerisms. As the focus of the essay becomes more clear, write a thesis statement to share the point you will develop in the essay.
5 Back up what you say
In this step, you will begin to write a first draft. Use the notes you make during the interviews and your observations to support and develop the thesis statement.

6 Establish form and structure
As you follow this step, look at the sample essays posted in the folder for Essay 2. These documents will provide ideas for organizing the essay.
TURN IT IN: After you have applied your organizational strategy to your first draft, you?re ready to submit first draft to the discussion board forum for peer response.
7 Get feedback
Students will conduct peer response After you receive feedback from your peers in class, you will need to review this feedback and develop a strategy for how to apply that feedback to a revision of your first draft.
8 Revise
Follow this step to revise your first draft. Keep in mind that your revision of the first draft should incorporate appropriate peer response feedback you received from your peers as well as guidance offered in Step 8 of CHAPTER 3.
Along with your final draft, you will submit a folder with your interview notes, signed permission forms, and a brief situation analysis (see step 2).
9 Strengthen your voice
In this step, you will think about and make changes to your draft based on language choices: developing your voice, tone, and writing style in the draft. CHAPTER 19 of Writing: Ten Core Concepts offers a number of stylistic considerations.
10 Make it correct
In this step, you will look for errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling and correct them. You will also check your formatting for correct MLA style and make any necessary corrections. Visiting the Writing Center in Room 232 is highly recommended.
TURN IT IN: After you applied this step, you?re ready to submit your final draft on Blackboard. The link will be found by clicking the Writing Assignments button, the link for the Essay 2 folder, and the assignment link for Essay 2 Final Draft.

First, prepare for the interview:
? Write down their name and the date.
? Conduct some preliminary research on the person, if possible, so you will be able to ask informed questions and anticipate potential follow-up questions.
? Write down some questions you would like answered. Have in mind the focus or direction you want the interview to take.
Next, contact your subject and make plans:
? When setting up the interview, be polite, explain the purpose of the interview, and accommodate their schedule. Remember they are taking time out to help you.
? When you arrive and start the interview, introduce yourself, be polite and professional, and be sure to thank them.
? TAKE NOTES?as much as possible (you can record the interviews, but be sure to ask your subject first). Use quotation marks around exact words to avoid confusion later.
? Make observations on their appearance, gestures, actions, and the surroundings.
? Find out what a good time would be to call them in case you think of follow-up questions or need them to explain something in more detail.
? Write a thank you note or email.
? When you are finished, write a summary of what happened as soon as possible, when the interview is still fresh in your mind. Include all observations. (This will be turned in with your final draft.)

Be sure to print the Interview permission forms and the Interview forms in Blackboard. The interview permission forms MUST BE signed by the person you are interviewing, giving you permission to use the material from your interview in an academic setting. This is MANDATORY!!
