Arguing for a change in a situation or condition is often seen as a problem/solution argument, which is made of
three parts: (1) briefly argue for the existence of a problem, then (2) pose one or more solutions, and finally, (3)
evaluate those solutions and argue for the best. Let?s look at this in a little more detail:
Argue for the existence of the problem. Clarify the nature of the injustice, perhaps by explaining the origin, the
reasons people hold an unjust view, the development and possible consequences if the two parties fail to solve
the problem. But be brief as two?thirds of your paper should be devoted to the solution.
Pose one or more solutions. Workable solutions should solve the problem without creating bigger ones.
Evaluate proposed solutions and recommend the best one. It is not enough to propose solutions; you must
measure them against a set of criteria and argue for the best solution.
Let?s say your contention is: ?To help eliminate hate crimes in America,?The Laramie Project? should be required
reading in every American high school.?
Before doing anything else, you have to convince your readers that hate crimes exist in high schools.
Once readers agree that ??????it exists, you have to present solutions to the problem, e.g., imposing
community service projects on students who commit hate crimes, or requiring students to read ?The Laramie
Finally, you have to argue for the best solution. To do this effectively, you should state your goals, set criteria, and
measure your proposed solution against the set of criteria. For instance, if your goal is to ?eliminate hate crimes in
high schools,? and if one criterion is to be proactive, not reactive, then only setting courses on tolerance and
requiring reading ?The Laramie Project? will meet the criterion. However, if another criterion is ?financially
feasible,? then only reading ?The Laramie Project? works because requiring a course will also require hiring or
reassigning teachers?a very expensive proposition.
