Outline a story from the example on pages 67-68 of the parents who don?t want their pregnant teenage daughter to have an abortion. Briefly sketch the daughter first, then her parents. Out of the conflict, brainstorm several possibilities, and select three possible outcomes. For example, this conflict could become a Woman Against Society plot, Woman Against Woman(mother) or Woman Against Self. If you continue to write the story, you will, or course, narrow the selection to one outcome, but it still may contain the three lines of conflict.
Objective: To practice exploring the possibilities of a conflict. From one basic conflict, you can derive several plots. Recognize your best possible plot from the sketches.
Check: Did you let the plot work as cause and effect? Characters and their confliction desires are the cause. Have you found the right effects? Do your outcomes follow smoothly and reasonably from the characters in the conflict?
Example (Page 67-68)
?Most strong conflicts?from the protagonists? point of view–resemble war. War is a useful metaphor for analyzing action in a story. In a war, there usually is a contested territory?the Golan Heights. Nagorno-Karabakh, Sarajevo Airport. If you can manage to clearly define the contested territory in a story, you will have a powerful focus, out of which the story may flow with surprising ease. For example: conservative parents may battle their liberal and impoverished daughter who wants an abortion. Clearly, the battle is localized on the uterus of the young woman, and to write the story, we must put the family together and let them fight. In terms of the simple chart of Man Against Man, this plot would become Woman Against Society, Woman Against Woman (Daughter against Mother) and in the long run, perhaps at the crisis point, it would boil down to Self against Self, if the woman gets to choose. No matter what out forms of conflict assumes, in most fiction the conflict will entail Self against self, since the motivation that moves the struggle is usually internal, a part of the character?s psyche.?
