CLD 212–Curriculum II: Program Planning Designing Learning Materials and Programming for Young Children Weight: 30% Young children’s learning emerges from their active engagement with materials in their environment. Students will develop materials for young children that will support their learning and development. To support educators in effectively planning and implementing the materials for children’s learning, students will prepare an educator’s (caregiver’s) program planning manual/guidelines to use in conjunction with the materials. Presentation: Using a poster presentation format, students will present the highlights of their designs. Learning Materials In pairs (2) you will design and construct two learning materials that may be used in an early childhood setting for children with disabilities (e.g., orphanage, school setting) and may be fabricated in a lab in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Application of the five relevant principles of learning in early childhood should be evident in your design (sensory stimulation, active involvement (learning by doing), hands on play, concept/skill inherent in play material, and consideration for various learning styles. See attached document for complete description of principles. Begin with a list of materials that are needed to fabricate your designs. Next, include step by step written instructions for designing the learning materials. You must include photographs for each stage of the construction. Each of your learning materials will need to focus on sensory stimulation. Select an additional dominant area of development for each one that is unique to your learning materials (e.g., material one: auditory plus fine motor; material two: auditory plus gross motor).

Theoretical Component Prepare guidelines to use in conjunction with the materials. The guidelines should include the following: Introduction ? As an introduction to the guidebook describe your materials and their use for children’s learning and development. ? Discuss each of the five relevant principles of learning in early childhood and how each of your materials support the principles. Approach ? Select one of the curricula theories discussed in the course (i.e., High/Scope, Reggio Emilia, Montessori, Head Start or Waldorf) and describe how your learning materials apply the principles of that approach to teaching practice.
Presentation: (Due Dates: Week 11 & 12) (10%) In Week Ten, you will submit a detailed outline for your poster presentation (maximum three pages). Three percent (3%) will be deducted from the presentation mark if the outline is not submitted. Your outline should include the following: ? description of both learning materials ? curriculum approach ? the five learning principles ? what you plan to highlight for your presentation ? headings you plan to use for your poster (you may sketch an outline of your poster) ? other….
Students will present their project either in week 11 or week 12 during class time. Students must attend both days and attend all presentations. You will have approximately 5 minutes to present your work to the professor; therefore, you must determine which parts of the project you wish to highlight in your talk.

Create a poster panel presentation of your project to mount and display in the classroom. Please choose free standing boards (recommended size 42” X 48”) that can be displayed on the tables. Based on your project, your presentation should include (but is not limited to): ? your two learning materials ? description of both learning materials ? materials needed ? step-by-step instructions ? photographs of the construction ? curriculum approach ? the five learning principles ? a photograph of your poster to be included with your submitted assignment ? other….(students’ choice) Presentation dates and times will be determined in Week 10. Students will have the opportunity to visit other students’ posters in order to exchange ideas and information regarding the different projects.

This assignment will be completed in pairs. Students wishing to work alone must consult with the
professor and a decision will be made on a case by case basis.
Marks will be allocated as follows:
10 marks for the Design and Construction 8 marks for the Theoretical Component 2 marks for the Overall Quality of Project o quality of writing (grammar, spelling) o APA format o use of references/sources (in addition to the textbook, it is expected that a minimum of four references/sources will be used) o overall organization of the project 10 marks for the Poster Presentation
